last weekend i went out with friends and there we met a couple of their friends that i met for the 1st time, they are married german couple around 30, very nice couple actually.
we had dinner and a few drinks and we talked and laughed a lot, then suddenly the wife tells me:
u know, u r really a nice guy, actually although...
i asked: although what?
she: sorry to say this, although u r egyptian!!
i was shocked of course and asked: why? whats wrong with egyptians
she: well, we were in egypt few years ago and we didnt have the best experience
i thought, probably the usual things like getting annoyed by sha77ateen, or getting fooled by nassabeen khan el khaleely or mo3aksat el sha3b el wesekh who thinks any european woman is a whore, but what she told me was really far beyond my imagination!!!!
she: well u know, tourists have to pay "baksheesh" for the tour guide
i said b montaha el seqa: well maybe its common to do this but its surely not a must
they laughed: well its written in every tourist guide about egypt but we thought its not correct to do it so we didnt pay
me: wow, is it really written in tourist guides?
she: yeah yeah and the first thing u have to do when u arrive at the hotel is that the tour guide introduces himself and tells the amount of money u have to pay and he starts collecting the money.
me (tab3an weshy ebtada yetlawwen b alwan el teef): and what happened when u didnt pay?
she: that was actually the problem, he started insulting us, talkin to us very badly and he was even threatening us all the time
me: what?????? threatening????
she: yes, it really got very dangerous and i was never so afraid in my whole life

a "quiet" monday night

its monday night, a very quiet one as most of the week nights here in germany, i am sitting at home browsing the internet, listening to music, drinking my beer, everything sooooo quiet and peaceful, suddenly ... a huge sound breaking the silence, a woman probably just in front of my door (i even thought she was inside my home) crying and shouting in german: leave me alone, i am calling the police, i cant take it anymore.... as an egyptian the 1st reaction was to run to the door, starting to open it, then wait wait wait, u r in germany ya ro7 ommak, di mesh masr, here everyone minds his own business....ok sounds reasonable, i go back to my couch, my laptop, then the same voice again, this time from the street, ok lets look out of the window, oh thats my turkish neighbours (somehow expected), the guy has beaten up his wife!!! i look around me, no one even looks out of the window except the nosey egyptian and of course 2 arab families living in the same house who went to the street to solve the problem (also expected isnt it??:)) i keep on looking of course as somehow thats more interesting than the internet:) the lady still crying, telling the story to the arab families gathered around her, the man tries to convince her to go upstairs, so did the arab families of course, but the lady: no way i am waiting for the police they r on the way, 5 minutes later the police is there, they investigate the issue, talk to both parties, actually i couldnt stay longer to know the rest of the story as it is here 4 degrees and i was about to catch a cold so i went inside and kept on thinking.... the police comes in 5 minutes for a case of a woman being beaten up by her husband!!!!!! ommal law kan wa7ed ballagh 3an gareemet 2atl kano hayeego 2abl maykhallas el mokalma???? eh el e7teram da??? i kept on thinking if the story was in egypt (which is something that happens probably everyday)...law wa7da etkhabalet f 3a2laha w ballaghet el police en gozha byedrabha, what would happen??? will they get her 3arabeyyet sarayet el maganeen? walla hayeshtemooha fel telephone weye2felo el sekka f weshaha? walla hayroo7o bas 3ashan yedrabooha w yeshtemo gozha elli mesh 3aref yoshkom 7areemo???? fi far2 kbeer awy....

german shisha experience

actually the title should be shisha experience in germany coz the shisha was surely not german!! rabbena ykhally el tarakwa (soon i have to write a blog about el tarakwa w fawayedhom el 3azeema raghm ree7ethom el m3affena)

so it was friday night, 3ayez ashayyesh!!!! the smell filling my nose, the sound of the shisha in my ears, so lets go for a shisha, but... who will join?? shisha candidates r karim and riad, karim is in egypt, riad in tunisia:(( ok i will go alone, many times i have done it in egypt!! (fein ayyamak yabo taha)

went all the way to one of the few "shisha bars" in munich (thats how they call el 2ahawy in europe), heard about it from friends so said lets try it, entered the place, smelling the shisha, ya salaaaaaaaaam, i sat down, ordered, the beautiful waitress brought the shisha (fein ayyamak yabo 3aly enta w 7atem, law shofto elli bteshtaghal shoghlanetkom hena, hatente7ro akid, 7asan w 7atem r the best shisha guys in the best 2ahwa in egypt, the famous abo taha)

started smoking, fi 7agat btemshy fel layy, called the lady, 2olt ba2a hatonfokh fel layy wel 7arakat bta3etna di, la2etha very simply gabet layy ghero, mashy, after a little while, 3ayez wel3a, called her: 3ayez wel3a, the waitress: it costs 1.5 euro!!!! (fein ayyamak yabo 3aly) tab nshoof ba2a el wel3a malha, used my experience and it worked zayy el foll, i started also enjoying the arabic music, wow its wonderful, even ihab tawfee2, tamer 7osny, m7ammad fouad sounded soooooooooooooooo different than in egypt!!!!!!!! how come i enjoy them?? in egypt when one of them starts playing, i just switch off the tv or radio or whatever is playing!!! when u r away, u really see things differently, even ihab tawfee2!!!!!!!

i enjoyed the mood and the whole night more than i could imagine, remembered abo taha, football games there, the food, the shisha, long talks with friends, i miss all this:))

for sooooooo many months i didnt write a word, a lot was going on, first problems at work, then decision to leave, then the chance to leave, then leaving the company and the country, then the new life, new job, new country, new society,... all these changes that were going on didnt give me the time to blog (sometimes i had the time but not the will maybe)

today i remembered a very wise statement that a teacher in my school used to tell us. i will write it first in german (which is the language of the guy) then translate it in english. (mesh 2arnana wala far7an bel kelmeteen el almany bas its really so meaningfull in german more than english).

when we complained about long exams, he always told us: "Leistung ist die arbeit pro Zeit" which means: "power is the work done per time" (P=W/t) but the thing is that "Leistung" in german does not just mean power, it also means: achievement!! so an achievement is not just what u have done but what is the time u spent to do it!!!

i dont know why i remembered this while sitting in a meeting with my boss and my colleague for one hour, i.e. wasting 3 hours to do something only one person (a team assistant or even a trainee) can do in half an hour!!!!!

as i said in the beginning sometimes i will have to write about politics!! and since now is moosem entekhebat, lazem el wa7ed yemshy 3al moda:)) actually i really feel its like moda or hoga, something new and egyptians always admire new things, in brief: yalla nel3ab entekhabat.

but why do i have this feeling?? why dont i feel its something real and important? why dont i feel i am part of it? i tried to think about it and found few reasons:

i dont have "beta2a entekhabeya" so i cannot elect
i believe the result is already known so leh waga3 el demagh
unlike most egyptians i am not fond of new things, i prefer to wait and analyze the first experience then join the 2nd:)
just the existence of morasha7 like el sabba7y is a big insult to all egyptians , just the idea of him thinking he can be a president makes me sick, howa e7na na2seen??? el nas betettarya2 3alena khel2a, ommal law da ba2a el rayyes haneb2a 3amleen ezzay?!?!

away from these thoughts, it was really interesting to talk to different people and discuss their views and to think about it and i have to tell u it was really amazing so i have to share it with u:

so many people want to elect mobarak b mabda2: ya 3am eli ne3rafo a7san melli mane3rafoosh, e7na 3arfeen eli hayeegy gedeed da hayeb2a 3amel ezay?!?! i found it really amazing to choose the president bel mabda2 da, maybe the concept is true when choosing someone to fix ur car, but can the concept be used in elections?!
others (amazingly kteer) want to elect ayman noor, i always ask them few questions and never got an answer (if anyone has answers i am glad to hear coz i really dont know): why was ayman noor kicked out of 7ezb el wafd?!?! or did he leave it just to build his own 7ezb? (as far as i know he was kicked out but maybe its not true), 2nd question is: how did he become sooooo rich suddenly?? byesref 3al 7ezb ezzay? i dont think at all its that easy, and when i dont get answers i am like, wow, u dont know all this and still u wanna elect him?!?!?!?! very interesting!!
no3man gom3a seems like a good option especially if u look at his background and the great history of 7ezb el wafd, but i find the issue of "begad" very funny, all his statements end by "begad", maho lazem yeb2a begad!!! heya le3ba?!?!
everyone (by everyone i mean mobarak, gom3a and noor) promise very nice things, but no one says how he will do it, i feel like: was all this available and we didnt want to have it?? were the 4M job opportunities hidden in some safe place and now its time to show them??
how can it be that most of us dont even know the names of the 10 morasha7een?!?!?!:))) or is it only my personal problem???:))))) i read their names every now and then and in 10 minutes i dont remember at least 5 of them:)

at the end i just wanna ask a funny question: do u think mobarak will win reaching which percentage?

so many things on my mind, the poor thing will explode soon!! ok ok ok, the golden rule says: set priorities!! el ahamm fa el mohem! ok stop thinking for a minute, list everything on ur mind then sort them according to importance and urgency,

wow nateega mor3eba, cant even list them coz i cant differentiate them, koll 7aga dakhla f ba3daha, kol el mawadee3 motashabka, never been through something similar before, i always knew what i wanted and how i can get it... but this time there are sooooooooooooo many parameters in the equation, they are all missing!! make an assumption that makes sense (golden rule from handasa) but now the parameters are dependant on human nature, on reactions from many people, how can i read their minds?!?! a wrong assumption leads to a wrong result, akeed!! just a second, did u just say wrong result?!?! can u even define the correct one?! can u differentiate between the correct and the wrong results?!?! actually i can't!!! GREAT, this solves it all!! if u dont know what is the wrong result and whats the correct one, then khalas, no use of thinking, just blindly knock on all the doors welli yefta7 odkhol feeh and adapt urself according to the new givens....

Cairo at night

yesterday night i went out with some friends, first we went to a cafe as usual then at 1:30 we found out that no one of us wants to go home, so we decided to do something that no one of the 4 of us has done in the past 7 or 8 years, we decided to go play billiards w snooker kaman:D
the first problem was that all the places we knew have already closed or ghayyaret nashatha!!! no wonder, we r talkin here about 7 years!! so we went from one place to the other, once finding a cafe instead of the billiards club, or a restaurant or nothing at all:)
finally we reached a place that was still there. it was like 2:30 am, come on guys its closed akeed ya3ni, who would be playing billiards after 2 am in the morning?! as we went inside i found out eni mabafhamsh 7aga, the place had like 15 tables, only 3 were free!!! where do all these people come from?!?!
anyway we played 2 snooker games ta7t she3ar sera3 el bahayem, the 2 games took 90 minutes (a snooker game with 4 average players takes max 15 min), the 4 of us had usually scores that start with a minus sign, but we laughed more than ever!!

on the way home, i was thinking, maybe for the first time in years, cairo is a beautiful city!! where in the world can u do all this after midnight?! where can u drive or walk safely at 4 am and watch a beautiful river like the nile?! but why is it only beautiful at night? why is it so ugly, dirty and crowded in the morning?! coz the sunlight shows all what the night hides? maybe! coz we dont take care of it? akeeeeeed! BUT why ba2a dont we take care of it? dont we like it? dont we feel its ours?! mesh 3aref but why i know is we have a beautiful city but we r the ones making it look ugly...

finally i started my own blog!!!

had this thought for long time after reading many blogs from friends and relatives but was always too lazy and too busy to start it but as the nice month of August started (almost everyone in Europe is on vacation so there is not really a lot to do and I can't get a vacation for many reasons that need a separate post to talk about) so I decided today I will start blogging!! BUT there r rules for this blog:):

Don't expect new posts everyday (ok I have some free time these days but who knows what will happen in the next time)
Don't expect high quality writing (I am an engineer not an author)
Don't expect politics (mesh bafham fel seyasa wala ba7ebbaha wala nawy a7ebbaha) but sometimes it gets on my nerves so I am forced to talk about it and what will be posted will be "gahl seyasy taaaaaaaaaaaaaam"
Expect lots of arabic words in english letters (some things can only be expressed in arabic, last rule was a great example for this)
Can't think of more rules but 4 rules r not enough, so I will just say expect anything and live with it:))

so, everyone is now 3ala bayyena w 3aref what is waiting for him, i.e. everyone is reading on his own risk!!:)

Ok lets say few words on why the name: a better place, i dunno, the old song of michael jackson just came across my mind when i was asked to find a name for my blog, maybe bel sodfa, maybe coz i am really sad of whats going on all around the world and think if we cant make it a better place now, it's over and we will never be able to make it good coz after a while "a better place" will still be bad. And it all starts at the people themselves, me and u, not at the politicians, presidents, kings or decision makers, just like the pyramid, the top is only good if the base is solid...

so, as this is my 1st post, i have to welcome u here!! so welcome my dear guests, visit me every now and then, enjoy my thoughts, accept it or refuse it, but always comment!!!
